The reading passage illustrates that humpback whales take benefits of stars to navigate while they migrate for a long distance and provides some specific reasons. While, the lecturer refutes the claim and explains that the idea is fascinating but not convincing at all and supports his own reasons.
First, the author asserts that whales are intelligent enough to keep track of the stars to migrate. However, the professor posits that it does not seem to be any connection between intelligence and navigation. He puts this idea forward by adding that some birds such as ducks also migrate, however, they have just average cognition ability. This means that navigation ability is intrinsic.
Second, the writer holds the opinion that the whales migrate in a straight line because they are using starts as animals rely on landmarks. Conversely, the speaker states that there are not any external forces needed for the marine giant animals to navigate. Since they have bio-magnate in their brain, they migrate using earth magnetic direction rather than stars.
Third, although the author claims that the behavior termed "spy-hopping" functions as star spying, however, the professor believes that it does not have anything to do with stars. Additionally, he explains that sharks do the same behavior for hunting. Furthermore, whales do the behavior during day time. Consequently, the claim is just a pure speculation and spy-hopping is not relevant to starts and navigation.
