The reading and lecture both discuss the idea of increasing the tax on cigarettes. While the reading provides three advantages of the high cigarettes taxation, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading states that increase the tax on cigarettes will encourage smokers to stop that bad habit. On the other hand, the professor argues this idea by pointing out that this action will not lead people to quit smoking. In contrast, many people will buy low quality cigarettes which is more cheap. As a result, many people will get very high risk. In addition, they will have less money to buy healthy food.
In addition, the article avers that it is totally fair to increase the taxes on cigarette. This is because smokers increase the medical cost on society. However, the professor argues this point by explaining that this is will be fair for people with unhealthy behviour, but unfair for others. For instance, smokers with high earning comparing to smokers with low income who smoke the same amount of cigarettes will be totally unfair. This is because this taxation will be more burden on low income people.
Lastly, the reading shows that the government will benefit from this idea because the can use the tax revenue to improve the education level and the public places. Nevertheless, the professor questions this idea by saying that the government should do downsizing. For example, the government should not allow people to smoke in public areas such as parks and private places. In addition, they should put rules and polices to inhibit that issue. So, many people will be aware to avoid losing their income.
