The reading claims that in order to send humans to Mars, scientists must solve some problems that they haven't been confronted when they conquer the moon. The lecturer, on the other hand, finds all the ideas mentioned by the reading dubious and presents some rebuttals to refute them all.
The author argues that the trip to Mars and back will take at least two years and because of the limited capacity of the spaceship, astronauts cannot take enough food, water, and oxygen with them. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that they can easily use hydroponics techniques, which concerns about growing plants in water instead of soil, to provide food and recycle wastewater. In addition, growing plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, and astronauts have fresh air to breathe too.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that zero-gravity of space create some health problems for astronauts in the long-term, like decreasing muscle mass and lowering bone density. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that astronauts have learned several techniques to surmount the repercussions of zero-gravity. She goes on stating that astronauts can exercise regularly to strengthen their muscle mass and use vitamins and minerals to overcome with the lower bone density.
Finally, the reading asserts that astronauts would be exposed to dangerous levels of space radiation, most of which comes from the sun, and constructing a shield to protect them would be impossible since too much weight would be added to the spaceship. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that they aren't exposed to deadly levels of radiation all the time since the sun is sometimes particularly active and emit dangerous radiations. In fact, she argues, astronauts can use an instrument to detect when the levels of radiation are deadly, and they could use a light shelter to shield the spaceship in the times of dangerous active radiation and protect themselves.
