Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.
The reading passage discusses several problems related to sending humans to Mars. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading passage.
First, the author claims that since the trip to Mars lasts very long, there should be a sufficient amount of food, water, and oxygen which is really a difficult requirement. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that by cultivating hydroponics the problem can be solved. These plants grow in water rather than soil and therefore not only do they provide an adequate food supply for astronauts but also through recycling water by their roots and absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen they provide water and oxygen.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that the negative and harmful effects of the zero-gravity condition are so severe that they impede astronauts to make the trip with no medical problem. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that in the similar experiences of the zero-gravity in spaceships, astronauts were able to cope with their problems by using special techniques. For instance, by regular muscle exercises as well as consuming minerals like Calcium to maintain their bone strength, astronauts have been able to manage problems related to the zero-gravity environment.
Finally, the passage states that extreme levels of radiation could be a hazard to spaceships and constructing a shield is not a practical solution since it would add too much weight to the ship. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that extreme levels of radiation take place occasionally. Also, to prevent the effects of extreme radiation the spaceship could be equipped with monitoring equipment that adds a shield whenever the level of radiation is high. The shield does not add much weight and it could be collected after the danger passes.
