TPO 52 Integrated-Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons. Low Gravity To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity. When landing a spaceship, the craft would not be pulled as strongly or as forcefully toward the asteroid's surface, making the landing safer than landing on the Moon or Mars; it would also allow a spacecraft to carry much more equipment needed to set up the colony. It would also be easier
The reading and the lecture are both about the colonization of asteroids, which are mostly made of rock and ice. The author of the reading believes that there are three reasons why colonizing asteroids is valuable. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. he is of the opinion that it is not practical.
First of all, the author suggests that asteroids have low gravity compared to mars or the Moon. As a result, it would take less effort to colonize them. it is mentioned that because of low gravity, spacecrafts would carry more equipments and use less fuel to land or take off. The argument is refuted by the lecturer. he says even though there are certain benefits of less efforts, there are critical health problems for people. Furthermore, he argues that astronauts in space face certain health risks such as losing muscles mass and low bone density. So the health risk would be much more serious for the long term colonists.
Secondly, the article posits that asteroids are rich in rare metals. The author notes the colonists or business people would pay more than enough to fund the colonists about their missions. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that costs of supporting the colony and transporting minerals would much higher. he elaborates on this by mentioning that when there are plenty of supply of rare metals and minerals, the value of them wouldn't stay the same. Consequently, they would become much cheaper.
Finally, it is stated in the reading that it is easy to reach asteroids. The author establishes that there are many asteroids that in the region of near earth orbits. Moreover, because of this reason, sending or bringing the colonists are much more affordable compared to going and returning from mars. The lecturer, on the other hand, opposes that it is not easy to return from asteroids. he puts forth the idea that asteroids orbits don't remain the same that at some point they may be closer to the earth, but they would travel farther away from the earth. Therefore, bringing back the colonists would be much more difficult.
