Both the author of the essay and the lecturer's statements revolve around whether putting high taxes on cigarrests are beneficial or not. Regarding the passage, the author profoundly believes that there are three plausible hypotheses ahich alltogether attest that these action could have vast amount of benefits for the whole society. However, the professor calls all the mentioned claims into questions since they lack enough evidence to be considered credible. In fact, the professor believes that these reasons have downsides and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the essay states that rasing taxes on cigarettes leads people to buy less of them. The professor repudiates this fallacious belief by referring to more strong evidence. According to the lecturer, these penalty can encourage people to buy cheaper cigarettes with more harmful ingredients. Additionally, she goes on to say that this action is like putting taxes on unhealthy food, in that occasion people not only buy more fastfood but also have less money in their pockets for healthy ones. So this hypothesis is excluded and not convincing.
Another hypothesis presented by the essayist , hold the idea that taxes are financially fair both for cigarette consumers and others. While it is not adequate to prove that the rest of the society can run away from this burden . Nevertheless, the orator explicitly addresses this point when she states that by doing these reaction to unhealthy habbits, we attack all segments of society with various income the same. In the other words, people with lower income will be financially putted under a severe pressure while others don't. Thus the secound claim is also ruled out as the result of more decisive fact which offered by the professor.
Finally, the author brings up his arguments to a close by suggesting that taxes can provide an enormuse source of income for the government. While he actually ignores the fact that when this occurance happen, the government is more likely to be reluctant on preventing people from unhealthy habbits. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the repercussion of this merit such as ignoring the policies can be dangerous for the whole society. Consequensly, this hypothesis is also based on wrong reasoning.
