The issues both the reading and the listening focus on are the solutions for reducing the salt concentration of the Salton Sea lake's water. However, the listening opposes to the reading at three main points.
At the first point, the reading states that the problem can be tackled by using special desalination facilities for separating salt and fresh water through evaporation. According to the listening, when the lake's water is separated through heat and evaporation, it will leave behind solid materials that are probably very toxic to the health of animals and humans. Therefore, this idea is risky to humans and animals' lives.
At the second point, the reading suggests neutralizing the salt level of the lake by mixing them with the Pacific Ocean's water, which is less salty. The professor refutes this suggestion. The professor argues that pumping the Pacific Ocean's water to the lake requires the construction of pipelines or canals. Nevertheless, it must take a huge amount of money and resources to accomplish that the government could not support. So this idea is impractical.
At the third point, the reading believes that the salt level of the Salton Sea lake's water can be reduced by building the walls to divide the lake into sections for controlling. On the contrary, the professor points out the areas of the Salton Sea lake is often affected by interior changes such as the earthquake. Therefore, the walls built for separating the water in the lake would be destroyed soon after being completed.
