The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about an innovative method including taking advantages of box-shaped devices to collect water from atmosphere for fighting against the desertification which has brought up numerous consequences for both animals and human beings. Although the author states some reasons implying that this technique is not practical, the lecturer finds them unconvincing and provides three counter reasons to refute them all.
First of all, the author mentions the expenses for these devices for millions of trees. On the other hand, the lecturer explains that once the younger trees grow enough, there is no more need for such devices. Plus, these devices are designed to be reused several time, for example, more than twenty times for growing more trees. Therefore, the costs woul be logical and worthwile.
Furthermore, the author of the text states that maintaining and insatlling these devices would be problematic since people sould be volunteer to impose such devices for trees which have no profits for them in harsh climate. In contrast, the lecturer denies this notion, pointing out that this method would have some possible rewards for local people. Not only are they able to utilize thses devices to collect water to cultivate vegetables and other plants, but also they can take advantages f wood branch for making fire in those harsh environment. Hence, this state-of-the-art method would be gainful for residents of desert.
Eventually, the author mentions the devices' restrictions for conserving and collectin body of water in harsh environment. However, the lecturer dismisses this fact, citing that younger trees after growing sufficiently, posses long root to search for undergound water and moisture. Thus, they can survive without these box-shaped staffs. For one thing, this method has been applied to trees in Sahara desert for almost two years and 90 percent of them were successfully thrived and still blossom after these devises have been removed.
