The reading passage and the lecture both discussed solutions to over-grown cheatgrass in North America. The author of the article introduced three solutions to the cheatgrass problem. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. His position is that the solutions the article presents will not work well.

According to the reading, cheatgrass can be eliminated by animals such as cattle. The article mentions that allowing grazers in the area where cheatgrass grows helps to reduce the amount of cheatgrass and clear out the space for native species. The lecturer challenges this specific argument. He claims that this solution possibly results in opposite effects. He also points out that grazers are more likely to feed on other native species first but do not prefer to consider cheatgrass as their primary food source.

Secondly, the author suggests using fire to burn cheatgrass. In the article, it is said that cheatgrass is much more flammable than local species of plants. The lecturer, however, asserts that the seeds of cheatgrass allow them to come back quickly. He goes on to say that the seeds of cheatgrass are laid under the surface are not likely to get burnt and make cheatgrass quickly reflourish again.

Finally, the author posits that introducing a fungal parasite from where cheatgrass is grown initially will help to control its spreading. The author contends that a species of fungus can limit the reproducing ability of cheatgrass. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that fungus may not be effective for spreading cheatgrass in North America. He notes that the cheatgrass and this species of fungus already lived together for thousands of years in where they came from, and the cheatgrass has developed the ability of resistance. This fungus is only able to hurt the cheatgrass that is sick and weak.
