Recently, there has been a lot of debate about whether or not working a 4 day week would benefit both employees and companies. One group of opponent, represented by the lecturer, believe that working 4 day a week would not benefit neither the employees nor companies. However, others like the author claims that working 4 days a week would have a significant benefit for both employees and companies.

First, the professor states that to hire more employees would cost companies a lot of money, since training and health benefit costs a lot. Also he added that health expenses would not be affected by the 4 days week system. In addition, companies would have to create more offices and buy new computers for the new employees, which will cut the companies’ profits. The text counters this point by stating, that the shortened workweek would increase companies profit because employees will be more rested, and less likely to cause errors.

Second, the professor claims that the new work system will not affect the unemployment rate at all. On the contrary it might lead to unpleasant work experience, when the companies raise their expectation asking exiting employees to work overtime so that they can finish a 5 days work in 4 days. Which will save the company from the high cost of hiring new employees. On the other hand the text explains that, the shortened work week will force companies to hire more employee which will reduce unemployment rate.

Finally, the professor asserts that the new work system will reduce quality of life for those employees how chose to work 4 days a week, since they are more prone to lose their job in case of financial crisis, as well as been pass over in promotions because companies will prefer to promote a 5 days worker to ensure good management through the whole work week. However the text contends that the 4 days work week system will be preferable by employee because it could improve their lie quality.
