Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the accuracy of sea cow's extinction hypotheses. While the reading part lists three assumptions as the possible causes of this incident, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues that the main reason for this phenomenon is unknown.
To begin with, the article mentions to the overhunting by the native Siberian people as the feasible assumption of this event. However, the instructor challenges the validity of this fact by mentioning to the size of the sea cow. He states that the sea cow approximately weighs ten tons and its height is nine meters, which could feed the whole inhabitants of Siberian for one month. Besides, the population of this region was not that dense to hunt the entire sea cows as the food resource.
Next, the passage assumes that by the ecosystems disturbances, the population of kelp, on which the sea cow depends, had decreased. On the contrary, the professor refutes this presumption. He asserts that, in a case which the ecosystem disturbances were so severe, the total marine animals such as the whale should be declined. But there is no any report about this issue. As a result, the disturbances were not that much severe to lessen the kelp’s population.
Finally, the text posits that the European fur traders who came to the island could have led this incident. In the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on the accuracy of this claim. Based on his assertion, the population of the sea cow had decreased long before the traders' arrival. Subsequently, another factor had caused this decrement before the European fur traders. Thus, it did not relate to traders' arrival and it is vague.
All in all, the reading and the listening passages both discuss the same topic, giving opposing arguments in favor of their point of view.
