The article states that the reasons why the Steller's sea cow became extinct are not clear. It explains three available theories about the principal cause of the extiction. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes each of the author's reason.
First, the article claims that overhunting by native people is the main cause of sea cow extinction. The pofessor refutes this, saying that sea cows are so massive, weight as a ton, and enormous. Hence, a few number of them can feed the whole peoples of village. Therefore, it is unlikely that hunting by people is the cause of their extinction.
Second, the article posits that ecosystems disturbances and ecological changes are the cause of sea cows' food source reduction. However, the professor contends that ecosystem changes are not the main cause. He claims that ecosystem not just affect the sea cow population, but it should have affect other ecosystem. For instance, whales population may have been affected by this changes; but nobody report this. As a result, no food shortage caused the sea cow's extinction.
Third, the reading averts that hunting sea cow by European fur traders is one of the main cause of their extinction. The professor opposes this point by explaining that extiction has not accured after European fur traders arival. There is evidence that the sea cow's extinction occured before they come to the island. Therefore, European traders are not the main cause of the extinction of sea cow.
