In the reading passage, the author says several pieces of evidence to support the efficiency of cloud seeding in preventing crops being damaged by hail. However, the professor states that the efficiency of cloud seeding is not clear, and there are some problems in the evidence mentioned in the reading passage.
First, according to the reading passage, those laboratory experiments suggest the efficiency of cloud seeding. Although the professor admits the results of the experiments, she also claims that there are possibly more drawbacks of this method. For example, the chemical silver can prevent any clouds forming hail pellets, which can make a larger damage - the lack of water. Thus, this method is not effective but maybe more harmful.
Second, the reading passage says that the example of Asia proves the effectiveness of this method. Nonetheless, the professor thinks it does not make sense. This is because there is a remarkable difference between the clouds attributes in Asian urban areas and in American farming areas. The level of precipitation in Asian urban areas is higher than that in American farming areas. Therefore, the effectiveness of this method in Asia cannot be repeated in America.
Third, the reading passage poses that local studies can also prove the value of cloud seeding, whereas the professor says this is easily disputed. This is because these studies were conducted in the central United States, which does not mean this method can be effective in other areas with various clouds, such as the Eastern, Southern and Northern America. Consequently, this evidence does not make sense, as well.
In conclusion, the professor challenges the evidence proposed in the reading passage using strong points, and thinks the effectiveness is still not clear now.
