Both the reading and the lecture discuss the possibility of a permanent human presence on Venus. The passage explains three reasons for the impossibility of living on Venus. On the other hand, the lecture states three solutions for the reasons mentioned in the passage in order to prove the feasibility of the permanent presence on the planet.
First of all, the reading states that human cannot tolerate the high force of the atmospheric pressure of Venus as the spacecraft which landed on Venus were crushed only after an hour. However, the professor maintains an opposite opinion that if they build the station on the elevation around fifty kilometers from the surface of Venus, it would be possible to permanent presence because, at such a height, the atmospheric pressure is not that much. Indeed, it is equal pressure that human used to have on Earth.
Second, the passage claims that the composition of Venus's atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfuric acid, is not suitable for human because of the lack of two most essential elements that human profoundly are dependent on them, oxygen and water vapor. Nevertheless, the lecturer says that this problem can be solved. As he explains; using some special method, they can produce required oxygen and water from chemical materials existed on Venus and then can meet the human needs in this way.
Finally, the reading claims that because of the thick layer of clouds which fill the atmosphere of the planet, Venus does not receive enough sunlight. Also, due to the reflecting effect of the thick layer clouds, a large part of the sunlight eludes the planet. Therefore, in this situation, human cannot use solar power cells so as to produce energy. The professor, however, argues that if the station is built at the height of fifty kilometers from the surface, it passes the thick layer clouds. Through this way, not only do solar power cells receive enough sunlight from the Sun, but also they take advantage of the light reflected by the clouds.
