TPO_44: Integrated: Norse coins
The reading passage states that some archaeologists believe that the discovered coin in the state of Maine in the United States in not a genuine historical evidence for contact of Norse and Native Americans and provides three reasons of supports. However, the professor explains that many archaeologists believe that the coin is not a historical fake and is a genuine evidence of mentioned contact and she refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the article states that because of great distance from Norse settlements to place that coin was discovered, there is no connection between the coin and the settlements. In contrary, the lecturer refutes this point by stating that many other objects were found in that region which indicates that Native Americans were able to travel greatest distances and reach that places.
Second, the passage claims that no other coins have been found at Canadian sites, so Norse did not bring silver coins to North America. The professor opposes this claim and states that the Norse settlement in North America was not permanent and they came back to Europe. She says that, when they wanted to come back they packed up all coins and took them back to Europe.
Third, the reading passage holds the view that coins were not useful for the Native Americans. However the professor casts doubt this view and contends that attractive and beautiful characteristics of coins had value for them and they hold coins for their appealing value.
