The author points out to some pieces of evidence to indicate that the humpback whales migrate using stars. The lecturer, however, refutes the aforementioned claim and offers some counterclaims to show the arguments are not compelling.
First, according to the reading, there is an indication of high intelligence in whales due to the fact that their brain is more complex rather than many other animals. Nevertheless, the professor casts doubt on the statement since he believes that there is not any connection between whales' migration and their developed mind. He argues that some birds also possess this level of cognition, but it is not very high. In fact an average ability that they born with.
Second, the reading asserts that the special movement of humpback whales, moving in a straight line, is most probably as a result of utilizing external objects like stars. On the contrary, the speaker rules out the possibility by mentioning other explanation for this phenomenon. He thinks that the movement can be due to external forces like earth gravity. For instance, some animals have a distinctive feature in their body which is sensitive to magnet. Therefore, this biomagnetit contributes to a well orientation.
Finally, based on the author's perspective, humpback whales show an unusual behavior, knows as spy-hopping, in which they float on the water and look at sky. Using sky for migration can be regarded as a reasoning for this behavior. Conversely, the lecturer rules out the probability due to the fact that other animals such as shark exhibit this behavior. As a matter of fact, sharks do not migrate. In addition, they place their head out of water during day, and consequently, it is implausible that it can be consider as looking as stars.
