High taxes on unhealth food and cigarettes is the focus of both the writer and the professor. In writing, three reasons , including keeping people away from unhealth habits, financial fair, and revenue of government, have been elaborated. The professor, however, claims that these three reasons are not convincing.
As opposed to the writer's idea that high unhealth food taxes discourage people 's unhealth habits, the professor states that people would buy cheaper cigarettes which have a lower quality and contain more harmful components. Also, people living unhealthy lives will buy cheaper unhealth food for replacement. She advances the reason by saying that people who like junk food will spend less money on health food if taxes on junk food increases, because the total income contain in certain number for a period of time.
The professor continues to discredit the writing's assertion that taxes are benefit for financial fair, in which these by examining the fact that it is unfair for low income people. In detail, she points out that bad food taxes are more burden for low income people than high income, which means the people with the relatively low salary will cost more money in food than high salary.
It is the professor's third argument that taxes are negative for governemnet, which contradicts to the view of the writer that it is positive. To explore it deeper, the professor contends that the governement will gain a lot of money in taxes, so that they will focus on these incomes and will ignore other laws on keeping people healthy and eliminating the unhealthy stuff.
An apparent divide exists between the writer and the professor on high taxes of unhealth food.
