The reading and listening materials have a debate on the cause of the whale’s high pitch song. The writer believes that the hybrid, damaged hearing, and rare species, are the reason for the unique song. Nevertheless, the speaker argues these reasons all have certain flaws.
Firstly, the writer claims that the whale may be a hybrid, so its song is different, but the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. According to him, it is unlikely to be a hybrid. He advances the theory by saying that the hybrids have the same migration pattern as the non-hybrid whales, they are all-knowing to follow the pattern, if the 52-hertz whale is a hybrid, they will do the same, but by listening to the location of the 52-hertz song, scientists have been able to determine that(检测方式)they do not migrate long distances. And unlike other hybrid whales, it has its own migration pattern and migrates alone.
In addition, the author states that the whale might have bad hearing. However, the speaker opposes the writer's point and takes the view that this cannot explain the unique song, because the song is extremely high. Specifically, he indicates that whales like humans, generate sound from the throat, with this kind of high pitch, the whales must have an unusual throat. So there is no connection between the throat and damaged hearing.
Thirdly, the passage argues that the whale must be the only member of a rare species. By contrast, in accordance with the speaker, the reading's claim does not hold the water because if the whale is from a rare species, it must have parents who produce the same high-pitch sound. However, advanced devices have been put underwater for several decades, but have never heard of any sound from its parents, we hear the sound in recent times before there is no song being heard. In a word, a 52-hertz whale is not a member of rare species.
