In some countries young people are expected to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of young people doing this.

While taking a gap year between secondary and tertiary education is a ubiquitous trend among studies in most countries, it still raises eyebrows among some parents who are worried about the sacrifices and lost opportunities associated. Nevertheless, some youngsters can reap a number of benefits from this choice, especially as far as their level of development and maturity are concerned.

First of all, a gap year may be the perfect opportunity for a young adult to secure his first job. In turn, the latter may develop a higher sense of responsibility from learning the intricacies of managing his own budget, conflicting commitments at the workplace and other decisions normally faced by adults. Moreover, he may be better equipped to opt for the most appropriate tertiary course or career path, having gained a better understanding of a particular field of work.

In a similar line, travelling exposes the youngster to a spectrum of cultures while allowing him to indulge in life experiences which he may never experience while living with his parents. However, travelling may not promote independence if he is financially being supported by his parents. Risk may be another issue, especially if the country of travel is grappling with wars and internal conflicts. Negative peer pressure is an additional deterrent since the traveler is often accompanied by similarly- immature friends, hungry for adventures and excitements in the likes of wild parties with drugs and alcohols.

To conclude, not all gap years are within the best interest of young people. As such, it is incumbent on parents to ensure that the activities undertaken during this one year do not adversely lead to regrets and life-damaging situations.
