The line graph illustrates the percentage of people at the age 65 and over from 1940 to 2040 in the USA, Sweden and Japan. Overall, it is predicted that the proportion of this age group will increase rapidly at the last 20 years of this period.
In the USA, the number of 65 year old and over people started at nearly 10% of population. This figure then reached the peak in about 1980, accounted for 15%. The prediction is that the oldest age group of this nation will rise quickly from the year 2020.
Witnessing the same trend with America, Swedish in the 65 and over age bracket went up gradually from approximately 7% in 1940. Up to 2000, this group for the first time surpassed the US eldest age group in market share.
The graph also shows that the percentage of Japanese people at the age of 65 and over hit the lowest point at under 5% in 1960 and remained there for many years before recovering in the 1980s. The proportion of these people is estimated to grow extremely fast after 2020 and finish at the highest point among these three countries in 2040 at around 27%.
