The line graph illustrates the comparison of 4 different ways of transport( road, water, rail and pipeline) carrying consumer products in the united kingdom over 28 years from 1974 to 2002. Units are shown in a million tonnes.
Overall, the most amount of goods transported in the UK had been through roads while water and rail were equally popular at the beginning of the period, however, the water transportation exceeded the rail. The pipeline was the least popular mode of transportation of goods in England.
With regards to the road, about 75 million tonnes of good were transported in 1974. This figure fluctuated over the years. However, in 1994 it dramatically increased to about 100 million tonnes in 2002. This mode of transportation was widely used from the start to end of the period. The water and rail nearly overlapped at about 40 million tonnes for about 4 years. While in 1978 the transportation of the products by water increased over the years, carrying more than 60 million tonnes in 2002. However, the goods transported by rail plunged for few years. In 1998 it rose its transportation again to about 41 million tonnes in 2002.
On the other hand, the least popular way of goods transportation was the pipeline which stood at about 5 million tonnes only in 1974. However, in 1982 it surged to about 18 million tonnes and finally crossed over 20 million tonnes in 2002.
