The passage elaborates on three main reasons why the pattern of fine lines found around the skeletal bones of a Sinosauropteryx fossil are not feathers. However, the lecturer finds the reasons mentioned in the passage unconvincing and states that there is a strong evidence that these structures are feathers belong to the dinosaur.
First, according to the passage, the lines are not part of the dinosaur body and have developed after the animal death as a result of skin decomposition. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that they are unlikely to be the result of decomposition since the skin structure of other animals in the same site are well preserved in the volcanic ash. Therefore, it can be concluded that the structure of the dinosaur, located in the same area, has to be well preserved.
Second, the author points out that even if the lines belong to the animal, it is impossible to distinguish the lines and determine which part of the dinosaur body they constitute. Thus, they may be other parts of the animal such as frills. However, the lecturer states that feathers and frills are chemically different. In fact, feathers have a great deal of protein that frills lack. Thus, the lines cannot be attributed to the frills.
Third, according to the passage, feather’s main function is to enable the animal to fly or regulate its internal temperature. However, the lines are located along the backbone of the animal which makes them useless for the two abovementioned functions. Nevertheless, the lecturer contradicts this point by explaining that feathers are used to serve the animal for other functions. She gives the example of bird’s feather, a colorful orange and white feather, which is used for display functions, to attract the mate. The lines found in the fossil record are also colorful, which supports the idea that they are feathers whose main function was display.
