The reading and the lecture are both discussing private collectors, who sell and buy fossils. The author of the reading believes that they have negative effects on both scientists and public. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He says that these commercial collectors actually have more advantageous then downsides.
First of all, the author points out that because of private ownership the public do not have the access to many fossils and eventually people will have less interest in fossils. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the fossils are greatly exposed to the public, as many huge organizations and schools can buy the fossils and expose them to many people.
Secondly, the author contends that scientists will also lose access to important and rare fossils. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says that before collectors can buy a fossil, it must be evaluated by scientists. So, scientists still have the opportunity to study the fossils.
Finally, the author states that private collectors may destroy some important details while unearthing, as they do not pay much attention to the field work. The lecture, on the other hand, posits that it is better to have many discovered fossils than having less. Many scientists do not have enough budget to do many kinds of research, so it is good that other people like collectors discover new fossils even if they destroy some evidence.
