The reading states that asteroids are the best option to colonize on them and provide three reasons of supports. However, the professor claims even though, it is practical to land on them but there are various downsides to it and refutes each of the reasons.
First, the reading states that because of low gravity which is available on the asteroids, it is easy to land on them. However, the professor opposes this point by saying that although because of low gravity landing in an asteroid is easy, it puts the human's body under a great risk because the body of the humans tends to lose mass when there is a low gravity. In the spaceship where there is low gravity, individuals suffer from body aching. Accordingly, it would have a long-term consequence to the colonies' health.
Second, the lecture states that the asteroids are a really profitable source of precious materials like gold. The professor refutes this point and claims that it is not cost effective idea to mine precious metal from the asteroids because there are various factors like transporting them to the earth would add cost to the mining. Furthermore, the price of the metal would not be always the same, since if we supply more precious metals to the earth it would decline the market price of them.
Third, people can easily land on the asteroids because they are close to the earth. However, the professor contends that although it is probably easy to step on the asteroid, it is quite hard to return back to earth due to the fact that orbits of the asteroids are really unusual. When they are close to the earth, we can go there easily, but they would not stay closed forever. Accordingly getting back from asteroids would be a challenge.
