The reading and the lecture are both about the fires and severe storms in a forest. The article states that fire and storms in a forest cause many drawbacks, and explained about salvage logging which gives more benefits to economy and forests. However, the lecture explains that rise in salvage logging has a significant damage in forests.
Firstly, the reading claims that after the fire in forests the dead trees should be removed otherwise it takes a long time to decompose and occupies large space which does not allow other trees to grow. Furthermore, salvage logging helps to remove trees easily and keeps the room fresh. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that cleaning does not allow the growth of the trees in a forest. Moreover, decomposition enriches the soil and also helps for future growth of trees. Besides salvage logging leads to nutrients deficiency in the soil where trees can not grow.
Secondly, the article posits that decaying wood would affect the insects in the forest. On the other hand, the lecturer opposes this point and says that as the population of insects has been increased over thousand years the loss of insects will not take place. In addition, it leads to a long-run growth of birds and other insects.
Finally, the text explains that salvage logging has more economic benefits and provides more job opportunities for local residents. Nevertheless, the professor argues this point by saying that replacing the wood after the natural disaster is more expensive because helicopters should be used. Furthermore, jobs are temporary and will be given to more experienced and trained people rather than local residents.
