The reading and lecture are both about Rembrandt painting on a old woman. The author of the reading believes that the style of painting of the woman's face is not a trademark of Rembrandt's work. The lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article. She thinks that the portrait of the old lady is in fact made by Rembrandt himself.
First of all, the author points out there is inconsistency in the detail in the portrait such as how the old woman is dressed. It also appears that the old woman is wearing a white linen collar applicable only for servants, but she is also wearing a expensive fur collar that no peasant lady can afford. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that lady is wearing a expensive clothing which could add up value to the portrait. Furthermore, She argues that it was intentional to show that the woman wear that kind of clothing to show the portrait is about aristocratic lady.
Secondly, the author contends that Rembrandt is a master of painting light and shadow, but in this particular painting his style does not add up. The article notes that the face appears to be illuminated by light onto it from below. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that when light and shadow is removed that it can be seen on the portrait. She elaborates on this by mentioning that simple lightning can color the clothing and the face being illuminated so the face is being seen clearly.
Finally, the author states that on carefully examining the back portion of the painting it can be seen that the portrait was painted on a panel wood that is glued together. The article established that Rembrandt does not use panel that is glued together that is formed to adhere together pieces of wood. By these reasons the painting was removed from Rembrandt's collection of painting in 1930s. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that wood panel fur color made the portrait more valuable being a single piece of wood. She puts forth the idea that the old lady portrait wood is the same from Rembrandt's self portrait.
