The lecture and the reading discuss the idea of team work versus individual work . And while the reading passage is in favor of team work , the professor casts doubts on several key beliefs about favoring team work over individual work to achieve the required progress in a certain project as they presented in the reading passage.
To begin with , the reading claims, teamwork leads to faster results as group make risky decision that individual might not undertaken, as the responsibility in group is shared and no single can held accountability if the decision turns out to be wrong. However, in the lecture , the professor argues that in an experimental project in a company for six month , the decision was actually delayed because it took the team members longer time to agree on one decision and get consensus from everybody. Furthermore, the professor states that actually when the decision is the job of one or two individuals at most the decision maker takes shorter time to come up with the final opinion .
In addition , the lecture makes the argument that team members feel better about carrying out the work that is entailed by the decision the make themselves and not by the decision that is imposed on them by others which make them shine ! The lecturer totally counters this point by stating that influencers convince the rest of the group of their point of view despite their accuracy and other points of view might be ignored if not adopted by those influencers in the team which will make some members feel frustrated and disappointed specially when the decision taken by the group leads to failure at the end. Furthermore according to the professor, the individuals who don’t contribute enough in the project will get free credit if the project succeeds leaving the real contributors with not enough recognition or appreciation of their work .
