Both the reading and the lecture debating the migrating behavior of the elephant-sized dinosaurs edmontosaurus, which was very common in Northslope. The author of the reading supports the migration Hypothesis, whereas the lecturer contends that is unlikely that the edmontosaurus had a migratory behavior.
The first argument used by the author is that the edmontosaurus exclusively fed on plants, but the climate during the North slope winter was not favorable to plant growth, therefore these animals had to move southwards for feeding. The lecturer states the during that period the climate was warmer than today and in some period of the year the sunshine 24 hours, and this led to plants be present all the year long.
Second, the author argues that several skeletons have been found in the same site, and this suggests that edmontosaurus lived in the herd. He points out that many modern-day migratory animals live and migrate in held, thus this another proof in supporting the migration theory. The lecturer rebuts this claim using an example of same species of today-animal that live in held but they do not migrate, they live in held to get extra protection.
Finally, the reading says that the edmontosaurus was physically capable of migrating long distance, but the lecturer mentions on the fact the juveniles are not capable as adults and they would ever be made it, so in order to protect the offspring the adults had to stay in the north slope for surviving.
