The lecture and the reading are both about the purpose of the carved stone balls, which is a curios type of artifact that were very common during the Neolithic period in Scotland. . The author of the reading believes that there are three explanations for their purpose, whereas the lecturer casts a doubt on the theories made in the reading.
First of all, the author proposes that the holes and the many superficial grooves in the carved stone balls is the result of cords used to string them through. the lecturer points out that if these stones were weapon, they should have signs of war such as broken or damaged parts, like those found in other weapons from the same period (axes and arrows).
Second, the author suggests that because of the uniformity of their size these stones could have been used as a part of a primitive system of weight and measures. the lecturer rebuts this theory and she explains that this is not possible due to the fact that they are made of different type of stones and this led in a difference in the density and then in their weight.
Finally, the idea of the author about the social purpose of the stone balls is challeged by the lecturer, she gives two reasons, first the marks are to simple to have a social purpose and second she notes that the high ranked people used to be buried with their possesions, and no stone balls were found in tombs, neither nearby.
