Reading and lecture are debating whether or not a four-day workweek would be beneficial for all the parts involved, namely the company, the employees and the whole economy. On the one hand, the writer states that this schedule offers numerous advantages, providing three reasons of support. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the writer, saying that his arguments are somewhat inaccurate when compared to real facts.
The companies will not register higher profits, because they have to invest in other aspects. First, these companies have to hire new people, and this implies enormous costs such as new expenditures for training and medical benefits. Even though the employees work only four days a week, their medical assurances have the same value. In addition, more employees require more space, more computers, and more equipment, and all these costs affect the companies' revenues. In other words, new employees drag on new investments, and this aspect gainsays the passage's idea.
To continue, since hiring new individual is a very costly process, the companies will start to overwork the current employees, and most probably the latter ones would be required to perform the same amount of work in four days. Therefore, there would be no newcomers, and this means that the unemployment rate does not change.
Last but not the least, the employees' life quality is going to degrade continuously because of a less stable workplace. The writer asserts that the staff's living standards increase because they are able to spend more time with the loved ones, and doing activities they enjoy. Anyway, the speaker refutes this by adding that their chances to advance in career are diminished because of this schedule. The senior management prefers to choose people they can rely on, and who can be present at work for five days a week. This is because they need persons to supervise the companies' activities on a full norm.
