For any piece of art be it a song, a film, a sculptor or a painting—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

Art the word which gives a feeling of something creative or a person’s creativity. The creativity or skill is an individual perception some find it easier to understand while others may not even get a hint of it. Moreover the art can be valued based on its intrinsic value or on its mass appeal. In my opinion for the art be it song, film, sculptor or painting to have merit need not be understandable to most people.

Firstly a song, usually identified by its lyrics and music, understanding the song is secondary. There are various forms of songs which are herd and sung by most of the people across the globe or in their particular region. For instance a Arabic music or an “Indian Bollywood song” is enjoyed by most of the westerners similarly Jazz or concert of Akcent or the songs of Akon are very popular in Asian countries. The opera of London or the Thai “Alcazar show” is watched by people from across globe irrespective of being understood by them. Moreover apart from understanding there are others like tune, pitch, quality and form of song which gives its value.

Secondly a film, in true sense to gain merit it has to appeal all sects of people. Moreover it’s director’s creativity, script or storyline, actions and the Actor’s which give the movie a true value. The Twilight saga, James Bond movies are watched worldwide because they have the actions, the story line which appeals people in mass.

Thirdly, contemporary art painting or sculpture is another example of the fact that art might have merit without being understandable. The contrasting colors, the strokes and form of painting may appeal to most of the people without being understandable. More often it is bought by wealthy people for many other reasons, without being understood. Sometimes the same art gets its merit when it’s displayed in some International Exhibitions. Popular among them is the Picasso’s painting the common people just know it because of its price and for it’s International repute but not for the reason they understand it.

In conclusion, an artist or art work is merited not merely on understanding. In spite of fact that some understanding is required to perceive an art but the other factors like creativity, actions, contrasts, innovations and mass appeal which finally takes an Art to its Zenith
