The reading passage and listenning passage both discuss about altruism. The reading states that altruism is a behavior of a creature that gains nothing and give a lot of benefit and sacrifice for other creature with the result of behavior. The passage gives some reasons to support the idea. However, the lecturer casts doubt on reading passage and refutes each of the reasons.
First of all, the author claims that the sentinel meerkat which lives as a group in Africa is a good example of altruism behavior. Although, the lecturer refutes the idea that the sentinel meerkat doesn't gain anything while it is guarding the group. In other words, she states that the guard meerkat have better chance to escape from predator than other members of group.
Secondly, the reading explains that humans can act alturism by donation of their body organs to relatives or strangers without having any benefit. Despite that professor opposes the reason by saying that the donator who donates their kidney to a relative or stranger have appreciation from society. Therefore, they can have some benefits. Moreover, donators also have self-worth which is very important and valuable for some of them.Consequently, she claims that donators have benefits and it doesn't mean a kind of alturuism behavior.
