The reading and lecture talks about use of Ethanol- a plant based fuel. While reading passage lists three reasons why use of Ethanol is not beneficial, lecture refutes the claims with supporting arguments.
First, the reading states that, Ethanol releases Carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere during combustion similar to gasoline. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and responsible for global warming. The lecture argues that, to produce Ethanol more plants need to be planted. Plants use carbon dioxide to grow, as number of plants increases carbon dioxide utilization also increases.
Secondly, the passage makes an argument that, corn is used as food source for animals like cows. To support the demand of fuel, at least 60% of the current corn production will be used to extract fuel, leaving less food for animals. However, the lecture counters this claim by pointing out, to get Ethanol, plant cell wall- cellulose is used. Animals does not eat those parts. So there is no effect on their food source.
Lastly, the article compares the cost of Ethanol and gasoline. Once the government subsidy is gone, cost for ethanol will increase. The lecture refuses this claim by stating, as the demand for ethanol increases, so will the production. Once the production increases, there will be no need for support from government and price will go down. Moreover, the professor ads, tripling the current production will reduce the price by forty percent.
In conclusion, the lecture dismisses the points made in the article and proposes ethanol as a good alternative for gasoline.
