According to the passage, the television appearances of professors are of great benefit to the professors themselves as well as to their universities and to the general public. However, the speaker in the lecture contradicts the passage by giving the following points on this topic.
Firstly, the passage mentions that TV appearance of professor will benefit them enhancing their scholarly importance. However, the speaker says that appearing on the television is not good for the professor themselves as it may affect their credibility among their peers. The peers may not regard them as scholarly and the professor may not be recognized in professional gatherings. Further, because of this decline in his/her credibility the professor may also not receive the grant for their research and it may hamper their career.
Secondly, the passage says that TV appearance of professor will enhance the university reputation. But, the speaker mentions that television appearance of the professor is not good for the university either. As, the time the professor spends in traveling and making an appearance on TV is the time lost from doing the research or teaching the students. The university would have benefitted more in this way instead of the TV appearance that benefits no one.
Thirdly, the speaker suggests that the TV appearance of the professor is not good for the general public either. As, the professor may not be giving an indepth knowledge on a subject on TV appearance and the superficial knowledge may not benefit the public. Furthermore, the speaker says that such superficial knowledge could also be given by a reporter that has some research on a topic on their own and so a professor may not be needed.
Therefore, the speaker in the lecture opposes the points made in the passage about the benefits of TV appearance of professor for the professor, university and the general public.
