The lecturer disagrees with the ideas in the reading by talking about the disadvantages of the three solutions to the high salt level in the Salton Sea presents in the reading passage.
First, while the reading passage suggests that directly remove salt from the lake's water through special desalination facilities would be a way to restore the lake's overall health, the speaker disagrees with this idea for the reason that it is likely to present serious problems by damaging the health of people living nearby. The materials dissolved in the water can include salt and other harmful chemicals. When these chemicals are solidified through these special facilities, the wind could spread them in the air and therefore people are exposed to the danger of inhaling toxins from the air.
The second solution given by the reading passage is using the sea water from the Pacific Ocean to dilute the salt level in the lake, since water in the Ocean is 20 percent less salty than water in the lake. However, the speaker deny the feasibility of this plan for its unaffordable cost. The Pacific Ocean and the lake are 100 km apart, thus pipelines or canals are requires to transport water into the lake. The construction of pipelines/canals is expensive and the speaker doubt if the local government would have the ability to pay for such a huge amount of money.
Thirdly, the reading passage suggest that the lake's salinity can be reduced by constructing walls to divide the lake into sections. The salinity of main sections would decrease as a result of the flowing freshwater from nearby rivers that would pass through them. However, the speaker points out that this strategy would only work for a short period of time because the region where the Salton Sea is located has very intense geological activity such as earthquakes, which are likely to destroy the walls. Once the walls collapse, the water from smalls sections which has high salinity level would be mixed with the water that has low salinity level.
