The reading passage states that humpback whales navigate by stars to migrate long distances, whereas the professors deems that this theory is fascinating but not much convincing.
Firstly, the author insists that the humpback whales is so intelligent that they can probably use stars to navigate. Plus, their cognitive ability is excellent which makes it is possible for them to use a complex, abstract system of sensory stimuli. The professor, however, argues that there is no connection between intelligent and using stars to navigate. For instance, there is a kind of bird which navigate by stars while their cognitive ability is only average, and using stars to navigate is just a nature gift.
Secondly, the reading says that humpback whales may use some external objects or forces to orient themselves due to they can migrate in straight. Since they cannot rely on physical landmarks like terrestrial animals, they might use stars to help them stay on track. In contrast, the speaker reckons that there is a different explanation for that phenomenon. The reason why humpback whales can sense earth's magnetic field attribute to a structure which called biomagnetite in their brains. And it is biomagnetite that help them to migrate in straight lines.
Lastly, the reading states that looking stars and extracting information from them can explain the unusual behavior spy-hopping that humpback whales sometimes float straight up for minutes and look up ward with their head above the water. On the contrary, the professor points out that it is nothing to do with looking at stars. And this phenomenon often happens in sharks. While these sharks neither migrate or look at stars, they spy-hop for hunting. In addition, humpback whales used to spy-hop during the day time when no stars to see.
