The reading passage asserts that humpback whales use the stars for navigation and provides some evidences for that. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on the passage and believes that these evidences are not convincing.
First of all, the author of the passage states these animals are enough intelligent to navigate by stars. However, the professor challenges this point and states that there is not a relationship between intelligence and the navigation ability. He provides one example of the dogs and the birds; and illustrates that although, the dogs are more intelligent than the bird, however, they do not migrate.
Furthermore, the passage believes that these wales migrates along the star lines. On the other hand, the leader of the lecture believes that these wales migrate along the magnetic field of the earth. Because there is a material in their body which is called Biomagnetic; that exists in the body of the birds that migrate by the magnetic field of the earth.
Finally, the lecture mentions an unusual behavior of this wales and states that these wales put their head on the water toward the sky. Then, the author concludes that this behavior clarifies that they are looking to the stars for navigation. However, the professor opposes to this acclaim and explains that other animals like Sharks have the same behavior but, they do not navigate. Therefore, the humpback whales do not navigate by stars.
