The zebra mussels are some shellfishes that are native to Eastern Europe. These fishes have been spreading to other parts such as North America. The reading passage claims that zebra mussels cannot be stopped to fulfill all of North America region and be a horrid threat to native fishes. Although, the professor says that they can not be so dangerous for other fishes for the following reasons.
First, the reading passage mentions that many of zebra mussels are transported to North America with ships. These ships use ballast water to balance and with these waters, many zebra mussels are taken to North Ameria. On the other hand, the professor says that this happening was for the time that people did not have knowledge. Nowadays, we can rule for the ships to change their ballast water in the ocean before North America waters and zebra mussels will die in salt water.
Second, zebra mussels are hardy species as the reading passage says. They have the high rate of fertility and they won't have any predator in new habitat so they will be predominant but according to the professor statements, maybe they do not have any predator in the new region at first but as time passes, they will have some. For example, in Eastern Europe, they did not have any threat at first but after some periods some birds explore them. Zebra mussels are good food for birds and the same procedure will happen in North America too.
Third, zebra mussels are plankton eater and as the reading passage claims, they will be a competitor for other plankton-eaters and it will decrease the population of native fishes. Although, the professor mentions that maybe they have negative impacts on plankton eaters but they can be beneficial too. These fishes generate some nutrient that is a good food for fishes that live in the button of North America waters. So it can help to feed such these button-feeding fishes.
