TPO 14 question 1
The reading claims that the salvage logging is a fruitful way to recover a ruined forest and for economic and provides three reasons of support. However te lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidences to refute them all.
The author argues that salvage logging help the forest recover by rapidly eliminating the remnant of dead trees. Conversely, the lecturer bring up the idea that the salvage logging cleaning process does not necessary right to creat a good condition for tree growth. Natural pocess of wood decaying would enrich the soil which make it more suitable for generating trees. So, rapid removal of dead trees woul increase nutrient of soil.
Furthermore, the reading posits that by removing dead part of trees, salvage logging would decrease the number of insect which inhabit within the wood and susequently their havoc to health of the forest. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that it is true that insect will be increased but is it bad (?). She also satates that a population of spruce bark beetles lived in forest for hundresd of years without any damages. Dead trees not only is the habitat for beetles, but also for birds and other insects which contributes to health of the forest and the removal of wood would increase the harmful effects on these animals.
Finally, the reading passage holds the view that salvage logging is economically beneficial and and contribute to add more jobs for local residents. In contrast, the speaker dismissed the issue due to the fact that the effect of salvage logging on job and economic is so small and will not last for a long time because of machines which used to recover the forest are include helicopters and other wehicles that are so expensive. The effect of salvage logging on creating jobs is temporary in order to it fulfiiled othersides that are more expensive.
