Ethanol made from plants like corn and sugar cane. Some people thinks that they can use ethanol as an alternative to gasoline. The reading passage thinks that replacing gasoline by ethanol has some negative consequences. But the lecturer thinks that the reason that reading passage mentioned is not convincing to overcome this idea.
The reading passage thinks that burning ethanol releases carbon dioxide which is greenhouse gas. Using ethanol would not solve one of the biggest enviromental problems. But the lecturer thinks that process of growing corn will overcome this problem. The lecturer thinks that plants need carbon dioxide to produce corn and this would suppress the greenhouse problem.
The reading passage thinks that using ethanol will reduce amount of plant for animal feed. Because much of corn is used to feed animals such as cows and chickens. But the lecturer thinks that ethanol can be produced by other parts of plants like celloids. Animals don't eat celloids in plants and using ethanol doesn't necessairly threat animals food.
Finally, the reading passage thinks that ethanol can't compete gasoline in price. Because the price of ethanol will greatly increase if the government stops paying taxes to ethanol producers. But the lecturer thinks that over demanding of ethanol will increase growing of plants and leads to drop the price of ethanol.
