“Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated.”
Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policies and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implanting the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position.
University includes many fields which can be given to the majority. Many fields like science, arts, commerce, fashion designing, mass media so on and so forth are provided, I am of the candid opinion that it is not feasible for a student to deviate from his subject of interest to acquire knowledge of other fields. Universities can only just provide such facilities but imposing students to take up other course makes no sense.
A student, right from his/her early stages of education is introduced to a wide range of subjects. As one receives a glance of every subject , one would be able to recognize his/her aptitude. Thus one pursues his/her area of interest in later stages. The claim that universities will provide knowledge from every field is not cogent enough. No university is a true provider of knowledge. According to me specializing a particular subject will make us more well versed with that subject.
It is also necessary that we must be a bit of every thing. Whether it is about sports, films, politics, religious practices we can have a perfunctory knowledge of everything. There are many beauty pageant shows where the participants are tested not only for their outward appearance but also their intellectual skills.
Acquiring knowledge cannot be imposed on anyone, it should come from within. There should be a strong desire within oneself to have a command on everything. No particular university can claim that they can give a complete picture of every subject, without any second thought.
Knowledge can be acquired by reading books, newspapers, watching sensible TV shows and capitalizing on internet facilities. Overall personality of an individual can be modified if one takes appropriate initiative to grasp knowledge. A true professional cannot cut off himself from his major field of study. Acquiring outside knowledge is also essential but not at the cost of ones major field of study.
