According to the reading passage, a 200 million-years-old fossil has been found in Arizona. The fossil which indeed is like the bee nest may be a evidence for the existence of the bees in about 200 million years ago. The skeptics refute this probability with three proposed reasons. However, the professor opposes all of them.
First of all, the author mentions that none of the bee fossils were found earlier than 100 million years ago. The professor confirms with the proposed statement but he has a different viewpoint on that. He states that the real reason behind the lack of bee fossils older than 100 million years old means that the trees which can produce a specific kind of resin do not exist before that date. The aforementioned resin could preserve the fossils during a long period.
Second, the professor and the author both agree with the close relationship between bees and flowering plants. However, the professor argues that the ancient bee could be relayed on the non-flowering plants such as pine trees.
Finally, the author states that the founded nest does not have the spiral caps which all the modern ones have it. The professor sees the nest from another perspective. He mentions although the nest does not have any spiral cap, instead it has the same chemical material which both the modern and ancient bees use it as the waterproof material inside the nest.
In brief, the professor and author give contradicting ideas about the presence of the bees in 200 million years ago. The professor illustrates the positive side of the skeptics’ doubts. Consequently, he corroborates that the modern bees can have a 200 million years old ancestor.
