The reading and the lecture are about the zebra mussel. The reading states that the invasion of these creatures is a serious issue. It might not be stopped and provides three reasons of support. However, the lecturer explains that there are possible ways to prevent the zebra mussel from widespread. he adds this issue may not be as serious as the author of reading thinks and he refutes each of the author's thesis.
First of all, the reading states that similar invasion happened in the past and the ships helped in that expand. While the lecturer opposes this point by saying people in the past did not have the proper knowledge to stop the spread. He clarifies that the salt water could kill these organisms.
Secondly, the writer says that zebra mussel could breed so fast and they have no natural predator, therefore, they may dominate the new habitat.
On the other hand, the professor counters this point by saying that this domination happens only in the beginning because the local birds in the new habitat would find the zebra mussel a new food resource.
Thirdly, the article mentions that these animals would compete for food with the fishes, hence, the fish species would decrease. While the professor posits this claims by explaining these creatures would have a positive impact on other fish population and may increase the number of them.
