In his set of material, the lecture and the passage offer two opposing points of view about reasons that could cause the sea cows extinction in Bering island. While the passage suggests three possible reasons to blame them for the extinction of these large mammals, the lecture denies to accept them as convincing remarks.
First, the passage declares that the sea cow has been overhunted by groups of native Siberian people. In contradict to this, the lecture refutes this remark by pointing out that the small groups of Siberian people might hunt the sea cows by according to the size of this mammal, one group could exploit one sea cow for several months, thus they did not overhunt the sea cows.
Second, the writer argues that the sea cow population may have become extinct because of ecosystem disturbances that caused a decline in their main source of food. The passage rejects this idea by introducing the claim that if the ecosystem disturbances were the reason of this reduction, it should have affected other sea animals as well as sea cows but there is no evidence of a decline in other marine animals like whales.
Finally, the author states that the main cause of this extinction could have been European fur traders who came to the island after 1741. The passage claims that according to their weapons, they were able to kill a large number of animals quickly. on the other hand, the speaker throws down this remark by illustrating the fact that the extinction of these creatures had already started before the arrival of the European fur traders, therefore they cannot consider as the main reason of this extinction. The lecture also states that the main reason for the extinction is still unknown.
