The reading passage discusses about the migration patterns of humpback whales and proposes the idea that they might be using the stars to navigate. The points presented in support of the above mentioned idea are totally contrasted by those made in the lecture.
First of all, the lecturer mentions that the intelligence level of humpback whales and their ability to navigate are not at all relatable and cites the example of a creature which is not much intelligent as that of the humpback whale i.e., a duck. He says that ducks are able to navigate using stars because they are born with that ability and not because they are intelligent. This point contrasts the idea put forward by the reading passage that humpback whales are capable of navigating by stars because they have high intellectual power than most other animals.
Again, humpback whales are found to migrate in straight lines and this is possible only if they orient themselves to some external forces or objects as given in the passage. Since, humpback whales swim in oceans, they are compelled to take the help of the position of stars in the night sky so as to maintain their swimming direction straight. This is contrasted by the point that humpback whales have biomagnetite inside their brains and this allows them to orient themselves to the earth's magnetic field. Thus, the lecture suggests that the humpback whales actually navigate using the earth's magnetic field rather than the stars in the night sky.
The lecturer boldly puts forward the statement that spy-hopping has nothing to do with stars because humpback whales are found to spy-hop even during the day when no stars appear in the sky. The statement is once again supported by another example of sharks that are found to spy-hop too but they donot spy-hop to navigate using stars. Instead, sharks spy-hop to look for preys they can hunt. Thus, the lecture contrasts and casts doubts on every point mentioned in the reading passage and provides apt proofs in favour of the doubts casted.
