The reading passage and listening audio are about the benefits and downsides of reducing employee’s workday in a week. The lecturer from the audio disputes the reading passage and the points that were made in the reading by bringing in following examples.
First of all, the lecturer argues that reducing the work week to four day would not bring in more money for the company as reading passage suggested. On the contrary, this will increase the cost that company spends for its employees such as health insurance and office space where employees work. She adds by saying that more employees mean bigger office and the employees will get the same health insurance regardless of how many days of week he or she is working. Also she states that there are other options when it comes to increasing profit or saving cost such as paying or compensating for employee’s overtime.
Secondly, the lecturer refutes the idea of four day work week will improve employee’s quality of life by stating that opposite can happen. The lecturer says that reducing workweek might reduce the quality of life because employees will have hard time by knowing that their job is unstable. On top of that, the employee who works five days of week are going to be far more likely to get a promotion or any sort of advancement.
Finally, the lecturer challenges every point that the author made in the reading passage regarding the reduction of employee’s workweek by stating the job instability and high cost associated with four day workweek.
