The reading and lecture are about the effects of offering four working days week to employees. The author of the reading states that offering four day week will benefit everyone and lists three reasons for that. Professor opposes this claim by refuting all of the claims made in reading.
Firstly the author says that offering four work day weeks will increase company profits as the employees willing to opt for it will take a pay cut and they can hire more employees for the same cost. Professor rebuts this claim saying companies have to spend more to hire new employees. He reasons that hiring costs, health benefits, workspace, infrastructure will eat into companies profits.
Secondly, the author reasons that people opting for four day week will lead to less unemployment as companies will hire more employees to do the work of the employees who opted for four day week. Professor refutes this by stating that employees opt for four day week doesn't mean companies hire new employees. He states that in fact, companies might ask other employees to do overtime to cover the work of employees who opted for four day week thus affecting their work-life balance or might expect employees to complete five days work in four days leading to pressurized situations.
