Productivity and Rewards
The reading passage puts forth an argument for the increase of productivity when an employee is rewarded while the speaker of the lecture disagrees with this view. In the lecture, it is pointed out that reward and productivity actually have inverse relation unlike what is mentioned in the reading passage.
The speaker in the lecture gives examples of the people who work in a normal working environment and points out that the people want to get paid rather than being motivated. Moreover, they didn't like the idea of rewarding someone as they felt like they were being manipulated by controlling force. The speaker also mentions that reward system can be counterproductive. While the reading passage gives examples about textbooks pointing out that "the closer the link between job performance and rewards, the greater the motivational effect", the speaker refutes this example by giving a counterexample. The speaker does this by saying that there is no any study that has proved that rewarding can have long term effects on the productivity of the workers.
The speaker casts further doubt on the passage by saying that rewarding might disappoint the workers. In a work environment where you are rewarded for getting the job done, if a employee cannot complete the task he/she might be disappointed for not being able to grab that reward waiting for him/her. Similarly, this system can also reduce the quality of the work. Since the people are focused on the reward, they might want to conceal their difficulties for it thereby compensating the overall benefit of the entire company.
Thus, the speaker casts doubt on the reading passage by logical and effective use of examples and other elements and successfully refutes the idea of reward system leading to the increased productivity of the people.
