TOEFL TPO 13 - Integrated Writing Task

The author of the reading states that selling fossils to private collectors is an unfortunate development for both science and the general public and give three arguments. The lecturer holds the opposite idea with the reading.

The reading states that the public will not have a chance to see fossils because new private collectors will not permit them to visit so; it may cause a decline in public interest in fossils. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that the public will not be deprived of seeing fossils because many schools or other foundations can buy many fossils and make them available to people by exhibiting them.

The passage also claims that scientist will likely lose access to many important fossils since they cannot compete with collectors who can spend millions on fossils. The lecturer finds this argument unrealistic and posits it by explaining that scientists are people who discover and examine fossils first. So, they already have an access to many important fossils.

Last, according to the article, collectors do not care about details on fossils and destroy many valuable scientific pieces of evidence. The speaker, on the contrary, believes that there are not enough operations run by many schools or universities to discover fossils and most operations are being run by private collectors so; it would be better for us to have at least more fossils rather than being not able to uncover them.
