TPO-49

The lecture forcibly contradicts what is argued in the reading material. According to the passage, some scientists maintain that whales' brain has a high degree of complexity and it provides whales a high intelligence and well-developed abstract system to help them navigate in open ocean. Nevertheless, the professor asserts that closer scrutiny of the argument would display how flimsy it is. He, in turn, presents several evidences to demonstrate his statement.

To begin with, the professor casts doubt on the theory by contending that there is no direct connection between using stars to navigation and high intelligence. Although the animal likes ducks have an ability of star navigation, ducks do not have high intelligence. Thus, this point undoubtedly forms a striking contrast with the authors'.

Furthermore, the author affirms that whales can migrate in straight lines due to an ability of relying on stars at night which can provide them as external signs. On the contrary, the professor stands in stark opposition and counterattacks the viewpoint by expounding that whales exploit one instinct function called biomagnetic to sense earth field and biomagnetic can help them swim in straight line. Hence, the claim of the author is virtually indefensible and does not hold water.

Last but not least, the passage may be plausible that there is a function called spy-hopping can provide whales information to navigate. Nonetheless, one critical point is left out of consideration. Pointed out by the professor, actually, spy-hopping is nothing to do with navigation. The professor declares that all of the comments are merely speculation. Consequently, the author's claim is untenable.
